RETURN TRANSCRIPT / EARLY FORMAT

Transcript begins:

Steward: Do you want the recorder on?

Witness: I don't know.

Steward: Then it stays off.

Witness: No. Wait. Put it on. I'll forget.

Steward: You can stop it.

Witness: I know. I know. I just... don't fix it.

Steward: I won't.

Witness: Don't make it pretty.

Steward: I won't.

Witness: She wasn't little.

Steward: Who?

Witness: Don't ask me that.

Steward: All right.

Witness: I know who. You don't. I mean, you don't know her. My daughter. She wasn't little. I keep saying that wrong. I don't mean grown. I mean... not sick. Not trapped in that bed. I don't know. I'm making a mess of it.

Steward: You're making a mess. We can leave it that way.

Witness: Good. Let it be a mess.

Witness: I wanted her little. That's awful, isn't it? I lost her little. I wanted the small hands. The pajamas. That stupid cup with the ducks on it. I wanted what I knew.

Steward: Do you want me to write that?

Witness: Yes. No. Yes. Write it. She was not trapped where I lost her.

Steward: She was not trapped where I lost her.

Witness: No, put 'I think.' I don't know. Don't make me sound sure.

Steward: I think she was not trapped where I lost her.

Witness: Yes. That. God. I hate this.

Steward: We can stop.

Witness: No. If I stop I'll turn it into a dream by morning.

Steward: Continue when you're ready.

Witness: She said I was making the house into a grave. That I had put her brother in it with me. Not like blame. Not mean. Worse. Kind. I wanted her to say she missed me. I wanted her to say heaven. I wanted the thing people say. She didn't.

Steward: What did she say?

Witness: She said, 'Mom, love him too.'

Steward: Love him too.

Witness: That's not right. It was stronger. Not louder. Stronger. Like... like I was being told and forgiven at the same time. I don't know how to write that.

Steward: I'll write that you don't know how to write it.

Witness: Good. Don't put closure.

Steward: I won't.

Witness: I hate that word.

Steward: No closure.

Witness: Nothing closed. Something opened. And I hate it. And I'm grateful. And I hate that I'm grateful because she is still dead.

Steward: Do you want those words kept?

Witness: Yes. Keep the ugly.
